JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed new plant legislation into law, opening the door for regulated national listing and quality control of hemp and cannabis-related plant varieties from December 2025.

The presidency said the newly enacted Plant Improvement Act, published in the Government Gazette, repeals the outdated 1976 law and establishes a modern regulatory framework for plant breeding, cultivation and commercial use.
