Daniel Chapo has taken office as Mozambique’s new president, extending the ruling Frelimo party’s five-decade hold on power despite protests by opposition parties alleging electoral fraud. The 48-year-old leader faces significant challenges, including mounting debt, widespread corruption, and an Islamist insurgency jeopardising multi-billion-dollar gas projects in the country’s north.
