  • Real-time result transmission at heart of dispute

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Nigeria’s Senate has reversed a controversial amendment to the Electoral Act after days of public outrage over attempts to weaken electronic transmission of election results ahead of the 2027 vote.

What began as a routine legislative review on February 5 quickly escalated into a national flashpoint. Lawmakers replaced the phrase “electronic transmission” of results with “transfer,” effectively removing the requirement for mandatory, real-time publication of polling unit results on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) website.
