ABUJA, NIGERIA – U.S. Christmas airstrikes in northern Nigeria have ignited a religious controversy that could reshape President Bola Tinubu’s political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections.
For many Nigerian Muslims, the symbolism of the U.S. strikes was stark. They were carried out on Christmas Day and targeted Sokoto, the historic seat of a more than 200-year-old Islamic caliphate led by a Sultan.
