Rwanda’s Inflation Rises as Western Aid Cuts Take Hold

  • Annual CPI climbs to 3.8% in February from 3.2% a year earlier
  • Rising food and service costs offset lower vegetable prices

Rwanda’s inflation edged higher in February as the Consumer Price Index (CPI) accelerated to 3.8%, up from 3.2% in the same month last year, according to data released Monday by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda. The increase was largely driven by rising food costs, particularly meat, milk, cheese, and eggs, alongside higher prices in the transport, education, restaurant, and hotel sectors. A 4.9% drop in vegetable prices was not enough to counterbalance these increases.
