PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA – South Africa’s inflation accelerated sharply in April, exposing fresh vulnerabilities across Africa’s mining economies as rising fuel, electricity, and transport costs squeezed households, businesses, and industrial supply chains.
Consumer price inflation rose to 4.0% year-on-year in April 2026 from 3.1% in March, according to data released by Statistics South Africa. Every month, inflation climbed 1.1%, driven largely by increases in housing, transport, and financial services costs.
