KINSHASA, CONGO – A temporary suspension of a high-stakes international arbitration over one of the world’s largest lithium deposits is exposing the fragile intersection of mining, geopolitics and governance in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Australia-listed AVZ Minerals confirmed that its arbitration case at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) over contested permits PR13359 and PR4029 has been suspended for three months, even as the Democratic Republic of Congo deepens strategic mineral ties with the United States and US-backed mining interests gain influence around the prized Manono lithium project.
