ACCRA, GHANA — Ghana has taken a decisive step to fuse digital identity with finance, transforming its national ID card into a payment tool in a move that could reshape financial inclusion across Africa.
The National Identification Authority (NIA) announced in early April 2026 that the Ghana Card – already mandatory for citizens – can now function as a fully integrated digital wallet, enabling payments in stores, online transactions, ATM withdrawals and money transfers across more than 200 countries.
