In this episode of the Allen Dreyfus podcast, Beatrice Mensah-Tayui, founder and chief executive of Cybele Energy, reflects on a breakthrough that has quietly reshaped how African firms are viewed in global oil and gas.

Mensah-Tayui led Cybele to become the first African company — and the first woman-led African energy firm — to secure an offshore oil block in Guyana, one of the world’s most competitive petroleum jurisdictions. But for her, the achievement is less about symbolism and more about standards. Winning globally, she argues, requires discipline, credibility and a willingness to be judged by the toughest rules in the business.

Speaking from Accra, she explains how Cybele navigated a highly structured licensing process, met demanding technical and financial thresholds, and committed to a rule-based operating culture that leaves no room for shortcuts. Her experience in Guyana, she says, reinforced a core belief: African companies must earn their place — not ask for exceptions.

The conversation also challenges assumptions about emerging energy markets. Mensah-Tayui describes Guyana’s regulators as among the most efficient she has encountered, underscoring why institutional strength matters as much as geology in today’s upstream sector.

Beyond the deal, the episode turns personal. She speaks candidly about breaking oil’s male-dominated barriers, the weight of visibility as a woman leader, and why Cybele’s success sends a signal to African entrepreneurs — especially young women — that global energy is no longer closed to them.
