YAOUNDE, CAMEROON – Cameroon’s opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary has fled to The Gambia following a contested presidential election that returned Paul Biya to power amid deadly protests.

The Gambian government confirmed on Sunday that it was hosting Tchiroma “temporarily” on “humanitarian grounds” and for the purpose of “ensuring his safety” as post-electoral tensions escalate in Cameroon. Authorities in Banjul said they were working with regional partners, including Nigeria, to “support a peaceful and negotiated outcome” to the crisis, the AFP reports.
