Ghana’s Cocoa Revenue in Jeopardy as Disease Decimates Farms

  • Ghana’s cocoa production is threatened by Cocoa Swollen Shoot Viral Disease, affecting a quarter of its cocoa farms.
  • Despite a substantial World Bank loan, government efforts to combat the disease have seen increasing infection rates.

 

Ghana’s projected cocoa revenue for 2024 is under threat due to the relentless impact of Cocoa Swollen Shoot Viral Disease (CSSVD) wreaking havoc on farms. About a quarter of the total 1.9 million hectares of cocoa farms in the world’s second largest cocoa-producing nation have been destroyed by this disease.
