NAIROBI, KENYA — Kenya’s President William Ruto has reinstated fuel subsidies after months of opposing them, following nationwide outrage over soaring pump prices.

When he took office in 2022, Ruto pledged to scrap fuel subsidies introduced by his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, arguing they distorted the market and artificially cushioned consumers from global oil price shocks.
