Zambia, Zimbabwe inject $440mn into regional hydropower project

  • Kariba water allocation raised to 30 BCM for 2026
  • $440mn equity backs Batoka Gorge hydro revival

 

LUSAKA, ZAMBIAZambia and Zimbabwe have agreed to raise water allocations at the Kariba Dam and inject fresh equity into a flagship hydropower project to stabilise electricity supply across Southern Africa.

Zambia and Zimbabwe will lift the Kariba Dam’s water allocation to 30bn cubic metres (BCM) for 2026, up from 28 BCM in 2025, while each commits $220mn in equity to accelerate the $4.2bn Batoka Gorge Hydro-Electric Scheme.
